Barefoot and Minimalist Running

Barefoot running is gaining in popularity. The idea of barefoot or minimalist running has been around for most of human history, and is still practised regularly in Kenya and northern Mexico. Those who support barefoot and minimalist running argue that it is better for the feet and reduces the risk of chronic injury due to the way the feet strike the ground when running.

The Vibram range of footwear has been designed for those who want to try barefoot running but don’t fancy running down their street without some sort of protection. Vibram shoes can be used for running, fitness and even just out and about. They can be a great alternative to walking boots when walking on even surfaces, although they shouldn’t be substituted completely as sometimes you will need the security and protection of a proper shoe or boot.

If you are new to using Vibram shoes, and with any new shoes or walking boots, it is important to break them in properly to avoid pain and injury. By wearing them for a short period of time every day, you’ll soon build up and strengthen the muscles in your lower legs and feet. They will adjust the way you run as well by landing flat footed or on the ball of your foot. As you will be used to wearing padded running shoes and landing on your heels, your body will take time to adjust to the new sensation and they may take some getting used to.

The correct outdoor clothing will keep you warm and dry but also allow your body to breathe so you don’t overheat and make your workout more comfortable.
