Man loses fingers in workplace accident

When workers sustain injuries while performing their roles, they often make accident claims to help them recoup any lost earnings, cover the cost of medical bills and generally compensate them for their suffering.

One man who may well be making a personal injury compensation claim is a 23-year-old agency worker who was performing his role at Studley firm Ricor Ltd when he lost two fingers.

The individual, who did not wish to be named, was removing a completed part from a production line when the guards on a power press suddenly closed on his right hand. The device crushed his index and middle fingers so badly that they had to be amputated by surgeons.

He is right-handed and so the injuries have affected him considerably. Indeed, he is unable to carry out many everyday tasks. In addition, he still feels pain in his fingers, especially in cold weather.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that the guards on the machine had not been maintained properly. Also, it was noted that the firm had not examined or tested the power press when it was installed on the site 11 months prior to the accident.

When businesses fail to live up to their health and safety duties like this, they place themselves at risk of accident claims.

Commenting on the case, HSE inspector Mark Austin said: “A man has been left with permanent, life-changing injuries following this incident, which would never have happened if the guards on the power press had been maintained properly.
“The machine had been used for nearly a year without being properly tested and examined.”

He went on to say that such failings are “unacceptable”. Meanwhile, the firm was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £5,407. It may well also be subject to a personal injury compensation claim.
