People who utilise Heathrow taxi services and indeed other London airport transfers may be pleased to note that Terminal 2 at the hub is closer to be completion. The facility is being upgraded and the process is due to be finished by 2014. It will be able to cope with 20 million passengers each year when it opens and it is part of a £4.3 billion development programme at the transport centre.
Recently, major structural work was finished at the £2.5 billion terminal and a topping out ceremony was held in celebration.
Commenting on the work, BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said: “There’s a lot still to do, but the opening of Terminal 2 could move Heathrow into pole position among European hub airports and allow us to set our sights on elite airports such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Incheon in Seoul.”
Meanwhile, transport secretary Justine Greening remarked: “For tens of millions of people each year Heathrow is their first impression of the UK, which is why it is so important that it is a positive one.”
She added that the government is keen to improve the experiences of those who travel through airports in the UK and this new terminal will help this process.
Individuals who rely on Heathrow taxi services and other London airport transfers will no doubt be keeping an eye on developments at the transport hub. The old Terminal 2 was closed in 2009 and demolished in 2010. It had been in service since 1955.
Meanwhile, BAA continues to pressure the government to reverse its decision to abandon plans to create a third runway at Heathrow. Ministers axed the proposals after receiving strong criticism from a number of individuals and groups. Currently, the UK’s air network is stretched and there is considerable pressure for further infrastructure to be added.
