The old saying goes that “an Englishman’s home is his castle”, and domestic safes are a great way of making that true of your home, without turning it into a fortress.
While it’s perfectly reasonable to be concerned about being burgled, it’s easy to slip into over-the-top habits, such as compulsively locking your windows and keeping them closed on the hottest of summer days.
By fitting domestic safes, you can keep your most important documents, cash and small items like jewellery and keys protected from intruders, without having to put your entire home into lockdown.
Greater Manchester Police are among the nation’s police forces who have been highlighting the risks posed by open windows during the warmer summer months.
In Altrincham, they did this by slipping helium balloons into homes’ open windows, with a note attached explaining that if the balloon can get in, so could a burglar.
The police force’s guidance on home security points out the advantages of domestic safes – including the fact that they are often designed to be invisible to intruders – and suggests consulting with your home insurer to find out which models might be suitable.
However, it’s worth remembering one important point before you lock away your house key.
If you have commercial vehicles, outbuildings or an expensive car, you might choose to lock the keys for those things away in your safe overnight.
Your house key should be an exception, though – keep it with you, or by your bed as you sleep, so that you know you can escape in the event of a fire.
As Greater Manchester Police say, “good security is designed to stop burglars getting in – not people getting out”.
By keeping your keys with you, your chances of escape, and therefore of survival, are much higher, while a good fire safe can also protect your important documents against any blaze, so that you don’t feel the need to snatch them from the flames as you evacuate.
Domestic safes can offer you peace of mind by keeping your valuables, cash and personal keepsakes safe and sound within your home at affordable prices.
