He made sheepskin boots from the 1950s onwards. When his wife said his sheepskin boots were ugly, in 1958, he named his boots Uggs.
How Ugg Went International
The story of how Uggs became a worldwide brand is even stranger. The surfing fraternity was responsible for that. Given how trendy surfers are the last thing you would expect them to wear is boots made from sheepskin. However, they did and it was surfers that brought the fashion to the US. At first international demand was slow, but by 2001 Ugg boots had become fashionable, which is when global sales really took off.
