CIPD chief: UK economy relies on flexible working

Responding to the 2012 Autumn Statement by the Chancellor, the head of an influential body has suggested that flexible working will boost the UK economy.

The chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) also called on employers to develop better people management skills. Peter Cheese said:

“[The Autumn Statement] underlines that the road to recovery hinges on the continued ability of the UK’s flexible labour market to support employment growth in tough economic conditions. It also depends on the efforts of employers to improve employee engagement, innovation and productivity against a backdrop of prolonged fiscal consolidation and a squeeze on business and household finances.”

Flexible time

Offering flexible working hours for staff is proven to boost productivity in the work place; allowing employees to fulfil other responsibilities outside of work. It also allows for work to be conducted at home when practical.

There are a number of different ways in which employers can offer flexible working, from setting up a job share to compressing and staggering hours. However, it is essential that the time worked be accurately recorded.

Time recording

Checking that the time worked and the attendance of each employee can be challenging. However, new and innovative systems which control the process from clocking in to payroll are able to help. These are available to all mid-sized and larger companies, whether 50 or 50,000 members of staff are employed. With automatic data collection, human error and delays are effectively removed.

All data can be easily analysed too, with reports compiled to aid decision making and strategy. With triggers able to be put in place to help protect the business and the individual against potential Working Time Directives too, the systems are helping the UK economy remain productive and proactive no matter the global climate.
