At one time you would have had to have been crazy to have tried to break into the music industry. With hundreds of thousands of bands competing for the attention of A&R people every single year and with just a few dozen being chosen, and with maybe twenty or so seeing any decent success, the music industry was much like playing the lottery. Furthermore, even if you were lucky enough to get a record contract, the advance you were given meant that you were in huge debt to them before you had even played a note.
Luckily though, things have changed, and record companies are no longer the only way to make it in the music industry. Instead, bands can record, promote and tour off their own back, and many new breaking bands have been able to make it without the financial backing of a major company.
However, due to this new opportunity for artists, there are also more bands than ever trying to make it and therefore, to make it today, it is about simply letting the fans hear you over the noise of every other band.
Here, promotion is key. From flyers to social media, it is all about getting seen by the end used – the listener. Many bands overlook the importance of flyer printing, but without them, many people at gigs will not remember your name or site and therefore, for one source of promotion to work, you need the other.
By getting flyer printing to leave your info with fans at gigs, you are far more likely to be remembered, and if other bands leave such things at gigs and you do not, they will be the ones to gain new fans, even if those in attendance preferred your music.
So getting ahead in music is all about being heard. But just remember it is not all about how loud you play or how often, but whether you have simple items such as flyers to ensure you are remembered.
