Also near to Rothbury is the Caiston Trout Fishery which is a tranquil 50 acre fishing lake which is stocked with Rainbow, Blue and Wild Brown Trout. Visit Cragside House and Gardens
Rothbury is near to a very interesting historical site: Cragside House and Gardens. This house was the home of Lord Armstrong and was the very first house in world history to contain lights powered by hydro-electricity. It was incredibly modern during its age and is still an amazing building to behold. It is perched high upon a rocky crag within one of the biggest rock gardens in all of Europe. If you are a member of the National Trust, entry to the house and the grounds is free!
Go Hiking
Rothbury is often used as a starting point for recreation walking and there are many great trails that you can get to from here. The town is surrounded by 26,000 acres of forest so there is a lot of wilderness to wander through!
For example, there is a wonderful loop trail which begins in the main car park of the town and will take you on a 5 mile journey past some gorgeous views of the Coquetdale Countryside and moorlands. Also nearby to Rothbury is Simonside, which is known as the “Sacred Mountain†and is a very popular destination for hikers.
