Fred glasses are truly beautiful eyewear. They are produced by the famous high-end jewellers The House of Fred, which was set up in 1936 by Fred Samuel. They are most famous for making the 18K gold and ruby necklace worn in the film Pretty Woman, a truly unique and stunning piece of jewellery. His jewels have been worn for decades by Oscar attendees. In the latest Casino Royale film, Dimitrios’ wife wore his star collection pendant and earrings.
The firm still makes stunning jewellery, but have recently branched out into accessories. The most popular of which are their sunglasses and glasses frames. They too are true works of art.
The Influence of Jewellery on the Design of Fred Glasses
Early Fred pieces were famous for their free flowing designs. His famous Eau necklace sat on the neck and looked like a cascade of water droplets flowing around and down the neck of the wearer. Each diamond drop was shaped like drops of water, but just like water, the shape of each was different depending on its position in the cascade.
He loved working with pearls too and strung them together in ways never before seen. His passion for free flowing design is reflected in the firm’s eyewear, some of which is quite ornate like his Pearls sunglasses. However, plain classic designs are also available for reading glasses. The Force 10 glasses are an example of this they are available in gold, platinum, two-tone palladium and gold or two-tone palladium and ruthenium.
Fred came up with many unique ways to use materials. He came up with the idea of stringing jewels and stones on cables of stainless steel. This gave strings of jewels a level of stiffness that allowed them to be moulded to the wearer. This innovative approach to materials and how they are used can still be seen in the design of Fred Glasses.
