Preparing for Auditions

For those who are new to acting and the world of auditions, trying to get the right break can seem extremely daunting. However, whether you choose to go with an agent or not, there will be many ways to find very suitable auditions, and each individual audition will indeed be its own preparation of sorts. In fact, the more you audition, the more comfortable you will be with the process and the easier it will be to feel comfortable with the rigours of the audition process.

However, for those still new to auditioning, it might not always be obvious what to expect. Unless you have had extensive training in acting, there is a good chance that the professional audition process will be a whole new world to you, and therefore many great audition opportunities can be wasted simply as you will not be ready for what is expected.

The first thing you will need to do is to find the right auditions. Whilst an agent can indeed help, there are easier ways, and you may well find it is not just easier, but also more financially rewarding to avoid using an agent and to instead get alerts about casting calls straight to your phone. Services such as Audition Now will send relevant casting information straight to your phone (for those 18 years and over only, £1.50 per text with max 3 texts per week) meaning you will get all the best opportunities for great casting calls but without the need to pay commission on the jobs you receive.

Once you have an audition, you will need to prepare. Always try to have a number of monologues at the ready that show different sides of you, and always make sure you have at least one classical piece and one modern piece to call on should you need them.

Finally, you simply need to be yourself. Be polite and courteous without being obsequious, and make sure that you thank them for their time at the end of it all.
