How Fast Do Leylandii Trees Grow?

Do you remember the story of Jack and the Beanstalk? After Jack trades in his cow for some magic beans, he plants the beans in his garden and goes to sleep. When he wakes up the next morning he is astonished to see that the beanstalk has grown all the way up to the sky! While Leylandii Trees will not grow quite this quickly, they are one of the fastest growing garden hedges outside of a fairy tale and they will impress you with their speedy growth.

Leylandii trees are often used around the perimeter of a property to create a hedge which will enforce privacy. They are very dense and they block noise as well as cleanse the air.

How Quickly Will My Leylandii Trees Grow?

The speed at which a Leylandii Cypress grows is dependent on the quality of the soil, the weather and the sunlight. However, in good conditions the green variety will usually grow up to 3 feet per year. This makes them the fastest-growing conifer of their type.

The golden varieties of Leylandii are not as quick-growing as they tend to bush out sideways instead. You can expect Gold Leylandii Trees to grow approximately 2.5 feet per year, although the hedge will fill out quicker due to the increased bushiness.

The Leylandii trees will grow slower in their first year as this is when they are establishing their root systems. In order to encourage their growth as much as possible, be sure to water them regularly during the summer months by soaking the soil around them twice per week.

How Tall Will They Grow?

Your Leylandii Trees will not reach all the way to the clouds like Jack’s beanstalk, but they will grow to a towering height. Most green Leylandii will grow to a maximum height of around 60 feet and the gold variety will usually stop around 30 feet.

The rapid growth of Leylandii trees means that you will have to be diligent with pruning them so that they do not get out of hand and grow too tall, blocking the light from your neighbour’s garden.
