For example, the 1,707 bouquets given to medal winners at the Vancouver Winter Olympics reflected the colour of the Canadian countryside and symbolised luck. The nine red roses of the Chinese bouquets symbolised eternity and the six lily leaves symbolised smoothness. The roses were from China and were red to reflect China’s strength and productiveness.
For the 2012 games, 6,700 bouquets will be needed with 30 huge arrangements for the opening and closing ceremonies and 130 for the conference facilities. Kew Gardens already has 20,000 flowers laid out in the Olympic rings.
