Flowers for Olympic Events

It is expected that the Olympics will bring unique opportunities to far more businesses than many people realise. For example, it is expected that flowers for Olympic events will be ordered in significant quantities. This seems strange to many people. They expect certain industries like security services, transport companies and others to benefit from the influx of so many extra people into the UK, but are surprised to find florists expect an increase in demand.

Most people can see that hotels and firms offering other forms of accommodation will benefit from extra visitors, as will bars, restaurants and cafes, but the idea of a florist being able to generate additional business due to the Olympics seems odd. However, that is exactly what florists and many other small businesses not operating in industries that provide services directly to the Olympics or the people attending them are expecting.

Why Demand for Flowers for Olympic Events Exists

There is a surprising level of demand for floral arrangements within the Olympics themselves. The medal ceremonies include the giving of a bouquet of flowers. These bouquets represent the country in which the Olympics are being held. For example, the 1,707 bouquets given to medal winners at the Vancouver Winter Olympics reflected the colour of the Canadian countryside and symbolised luck. The nine red roses of the Chinese bouquets symbolised eternity and the six lily leaves symbolised smoothness. The roses were from China and were red to reflect China’s strength and productiveness.

For the 2012 games, 6,700 bouquets will be needed with 30 huge arrangements for the opening and closing ceremonies and 130 for the conference facilities. Kew Gardens already has 20,000 flowers laid out in the Olympic rings.

However, the majority of flowers for Olympic events will be ordered by hotels and companies running corporate entertainment. They want to make a good impression, so will be commissioning special Olympic themed displays for their events to ensure they do so.
