Floor Labels

Floor labels are one of those items which if you look for them you will see all over the place. However, they are something most people barely notice. In some situations, they are critical to the efficiency of the business. One good example of this is within distribution and storage warehouses.

Warehousing Floor Labels

In a warehouse environment floor labels enable everybody to find what they are looking for. Most warehouses are used for storage or for picking. To ensure that everybody can find what they are looking for each location, picking face or storage rack has to have a unique identification or address.

Usually this unique identification is in the form of an aisle identifier, which is normally alphabetical, and a position identifier that is normally numeric. A picking location may be labelled up as aisle A, location 20 or A20. To find that location the picker goes to Aisle A and walks past the first 19 picking places and stops at the 20th one where the products they need are located.

Floor labels are used to help reach truck drivers and pickers to navigate the warehouse environment. Without these labels, it would be very difficult for the people working in the warehouse to navigate.

Having each location within the warehouse clearly labelled saves a great deal of time and frustration. More importantly, it makes sure that what is picked is what is asked for. For most retailers accurate picking is vital. After all the last thing a supermarket branch needs is to receive, 20 cases of still water when they have run out of, and want, fizzy water. When they get the wrong water delivered, their customers are disappointed and if that happens too often, they will soon begin shopping in a competitors supermarket instead.

The Properties of Warehouse Floor Labels

Because of the environment in which they are, used warehousing floor labels have to have special properties. Using standard labels would not work because after just a few hours of use they would be worn away by reach truck wheels and the feet of pickers. For this reason, warehousing floor labels have to be exceptionally durable. They need to stay in place and be able to withstand spills and regular cleaning.
