Effective health and safety can benefit firms

Companies cannot afford to ignore the importance of health and safety. If they do, they risk suffering serious ill-effects. As well as potentially having to cope with the human tragedy associated with accidents in the workplace, they can also fall foul of the law, and this in turn can cost them both financially and in terms of their reputations.

Making use of effective health and safety induction systems, bespoke training and so on is therefore hugely important.

Indeed, one organisation has pointed out that adhering to best practice when it comes to this issue is beneficial for companies.

According to the British Safety Council (BSC), there are economic benefits to effective safety measures. It recently launched a manifesto called Working Well and MPs and peers have shown their support it, bdaily reports.

Commenting on the issue, chief executive of the BSC Alex Botha said: “We all need to work together to help shift the debate on health and safety. Now is the time to talk about the real benefits, particularly business ones, of well managed, sensible health and safety. It’s not about the silly stories, the bad press.”

Meanwhile, Andy Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith and Fulham, commented: “Whether we are talking about industrial disease or whether we are talking about health and safety at work generally, we’ve got to ensure, in the interests of not just the individual or society as a whole, but in the interests of the economy, that health and safety is still a priority.”

Thankfully, it is now easier than ever before for firms to uphold high safety standards. For example, by taking advantage of web-based health and safety induction systems, bespoke training and so on, they can reduce their costs while boosting standards. This means effective risk prevention measures do not have to cost employers excessive amounts of money.
