When it comes to it, there are not that many fundamental differences between US and British house removals, however there is a difference between the nations in terms of home ownership, the amount of house contents that need to be moved, and the average distances involved.
What we call housing property and land the Americans term real estate, however there is far more real estate in the UK as there is housing property and land in the UK. The result of this is that houses in the US tend to be considerably larger than those in Britain. In fact many places have larger houses than in Britain, especially when it comes to new builds. Currently the average size of newly built properties in Britain is the smallest in the whole of Europe. In terms of cost, the average cost per unit area of housing in the US is very much less than in Britain.
As American houses are much bigger than British ones, they are likely to contain considerably more possessions. Whilst the average apartment or three bedroom house in Britain can be moved using simply a man with a van removal service, this is not the case in the US. There the average house move often involves several large removal vans. That is not to say that there are no man & van firms in the US, in fact there is a considerable number of them, it is just that they used for smaller moves.
Another important difference involves the distances that people move in the US compared with the distances moved in Britain. In Britain we might consider a house move from say Newcastle upon Tyne to Reading to be a long distance, but in reality it is only a few hundred miles. A move from say Boston to Los Angeles is over 3,000 miles. A long distance move in the UK might take a couple of days, whilst in the US it can take the best part of a week.
Also there are differences in the amount of money that US and British people invest in their homes. Although the younger age groups in both countries are more or less equivalently well off, the tendency in Britain is for young people to spend as much as they can afford on their houses, sometimes overstretching themselves. This means that there is very little spare money for anything other than essentials and the annual holiday; some people even forgo the annual holiday. When it comes to the older age groups and in particular the top fifth of the population in terms of wealth, then the Americans are considerably better off than the British. One reason for this is that young Americans have sufficient disposal income to invest in money making enterprises whilst the young British have tied up all their money in their houses.
