If you want to become fashionable in the grocery store in your sweat pants, simply grab any product off the shelf and start examining the nutritional facts, specifically the calories. After all, this has been the latest fashion trend for years, and its created a nice decoy from the important information you should be concerned about…until now. Lets find out why counting calories is as outdated as hammer pants.
Calorie Counting Doesn’t Create Health
I know…its not your fault. You’ve come to learn over the past 10 years that calorie counting is synonymous with jet pack abs and an ass so tight you can bounce a lump of coal off it and get a diamond back. Unfortunately, I’m here to tell you its not that simple.
You could be the calorie hawk, scanning the numbers of all the grocery store items to keep your family on the thinner side, but its not going to create any real lasting health. If you wanted to do that, you should stick to food that doesn’t include a label.
When it comes down to it, calories are just one of several factors to consider when you are shopping for food, including but not limited to:
1. Is the food organic, or at least low on the toxicity scale? (no pesticides, herbicides, hormones, or antibiotics).2. Does it contain any ingredient deal breakers?3. Is it a whole food, or made with whole foods??4. What is the nutrient value of the food?
The fact is, if you shop for organic whole foods and avoid toxic ingredients, calories are not an issue because your body will govern the amount you eat by indicating you are full long before you consume too many calories.
For example…have you ever see someone eat a 1200-calorie fruit/vegetable salad? Highly unlikely. How about a super-sized happy meal of the same calorie count? I rest my case.
So if counting calories is not the key to good health, what should we consider?
Avoid Ingredients That Are Toxic
If you choose to shop for foods that contain ingredients (anything outside the produce section, for example), your best bet is to know how to read labels outside of the “nutrition information” box.
First of all, ingredients are typically listed in terms of volume. So if sugar is at the top of the list, that particular product is full of it, and chances are the rest of the ingredients are not too good either.
Secondly, avoid the ingredient deal breakers, and if you really want to be clean check out this list.
Lastly, keep in mind that the biggest problem with these types of ingredients is that you can quite often find them being paired together either in the same food, or through food pairings of the consumer. That adds to the toxic complexity, and wreaks even more havoc inside your body.
Choose Calories That Contain Nutrition
You can choose two foods that have the exact same calorie count, but yield drastically different results in your body.
For example, I have seen people choose conventional ice cream over a berry crumble to avoid the calories of the latter dessert. The fact is, that’s ridiculous.
Although the berry crumble may not be an angel, it does contain some nutrition in the fruit and the oats that are typically present. Conventional ice cream on the other hand contains nothing more than modified milk ingredients, an obscene amount of sugar, and toxic substances like propylene glycol.
So even though you may eat only 2 scoops of ice cream, and ingest less calories than that berry crumble without it, you have derived little to no nutrition in the former as compared to the latter, and added a variety of toxic ingredients.
For further insult, keep in mind that any toxins your body can’t remove will be sequestered in a number of places, that will lead to increased fat.
Damn, all that calorie counting for nothing!
So do yourself a favour – learn how to read ingredient labels, and interpret them, before you search for the calorie count. Your shape, and your overall health, will make you proud for doing it.
