Staunton Chess Sets

Staunton chess sets are regarded as the standard equipment for playing chess. This style of chess pieces has to be used for official chess competitions and tournaments.

The term Staunton refers to the chess pieces rather than the board itself. Oddly, any style of board can be used to play in official matches as long as it has the standard number of squares. It also has to have squares that are clearly delineated. In other words, there has to be sufficient contrast between the two colours of the squares. However, most chess tournaments are played on traditional wooden boards rather than any other kind.

The History of Staunton Chess Sets

Nathaniel Cook is credited with designing the Staunton chess set. However, it has recently been revealed that it was in fact his brother-in-law and co-owner of his firm John Jaques who came up with the design.

The set was actually named after the person who was considered the strongest player in the world at that time. A man called Howard Staunton. He played with these pieces and promoted them.

Over time, this set became extremely popular. Prior to the invention of these standardised set players from different parts of the world were playing with different shaped pieces. This made it difficult for the game to be played fairly.

Standardising the set meant that each player could recognise all of the pieces quickly and easily. Unsurprisingly, it did not take long before the Staunton pieces became the standard pieces for official tournaments and competitions. At that time, all chess pieces were made by hand. The design had to be simple enough to be able to be produced at a reasonable cost, which was the biggest influence on the way the set looked.

Staunton Chess Sets Make Perfect Gifts

Anyone who is serious about the game of chess will love to own a set of Staunton pieces. They are beautiful to look at and great to play with. The clear delineation of the pieces helps you to picture the board in its entirety, which helps greatly with plotting strategies. The connection to history also appeals to many players, especially young players. Plus, of course, should you want to play in a tournament or competition you can use your own personal set.
