The Toyota Yaris is the latest entry into the supermini market from Japanese manufacturer Toyota. The redesigned Yaris is slightly longer, comes in a variety of different trims and models, and even offers a hybrid variant on the theme. Fuel economy ranges from 55mpg to 59mpg for the petrol models while the diesel achieves an impressive 72mpg and the hybrid boasts 80mpg. What’s more, the diesel is in Road Tax Band B, thanks to its 104g/km emissions while the hybrid is currently exempt from tax because it boasts a very low 79g/km.
Toyota are well known for making cars that are designed to last and built to keep running, and the Yaris is certainly no different in this respect. The engines are the same as those in previous Yaris models and there were no widely reported issues with these. Again, the most reliable engine seems to be the hybrid; something other hybrid manufacturers could certainly take some lessons from.
In terms of the available models there is a 1 litre petrol engine and a racier 1.33 litre engine; the latter offering just under 100bhp. The 1.4 litre diesel provides 89bhp and there is also a 1.5 litre hybrid engine available. Unsurprisingly, the hybrid offers the best fuel economy at 80mpg although the diesel fares very well too, providing 72mpg.
The wheelbase of the new Toyota Yaris is 100mm longer and although this does sound like too big a difference, once you’re inside you’ll realise that it actually makes the cabin and the boot noticeably larger. There is more room for the driver and passengers, while an additional 25% boot space is certainly not to be sniffed at. This means that despite its diminutive appearance, the Yaris can serve perfectly well as a small family car.
The Yaris has been around for some time now and thanks to the longer wheelbase and the hybrid engine, it has a lot to offer different people. It is especially useful as a town or city car thanks to its small form but it is surprisingly roomy inside, offers very good fuel economy, and will retain its value well over the years.
