Clevis pins are a distinctively designed type of fastener that will allow for rotation about the axis of a pin linkage. Clevis pins, sometimes referred to as hinge pins, consist of a head, shank and hole and when using clevis pins, the hole at the opposite end of the pin to the head is inserted through the items being linked together, which is then attached to a cotter pin, R clip or similar fastener to keep the clevises in situ.
Not dissimilar to set screws, clevis pins are majorly used to prevent the movement of the other two pieces that form the standard link chain. Clevis pins aren’t entirely flexible and they are less adjustable than R clips and cotter pins, in that they can hold two ends in exactly one position for sustained periods of time. Clevis pins are incredibly secure and generally remain flawlessly in position for their lifespan, as they are less apt to work loose during times of turbulent vibration.
Although not dissimilar in appearance, there are two main types of clevis pins: threaded clevises and unthreaded clevises. Unthreaded clevis pins have a domed head at one end and a cross- hole at the other end whereas threaded clevis pins have a partially threaded shank at one end and a formed head at the opposite end.
Clevis pins are utilised in many settings. From backspacing and sail boating to aerospace engineering, clevis pins prove their indispensible worth for securing equipment and more importantly, clevis pins are available worldwide via the internet and on the high street.
